Inclusivity - the practice or policy of including people who might otherwise be excluded or marginalized, such as those who have physical or mental disabilities and members of minority groups.
Diversity - the inclusion of different types of people (such as people of different races or cultures) in a group or organization programs intended to promote diversity in schools.
why are inclusivity and diversity important to content creation?
As individuals, we are drawn to what is familiar to us. For the majority of us, that means our media and content look white, middle-class, straight, and male. This is a product of our industry: we create what we know, and often times when we try to create content to appeal to a different audience without truly understanding who they are, the results are at best, unsuccessful, and at worst, harmful.
As content creators, we have a duty and opportunity to seek out the voices of those who are unheard or unseen in our media and see that they are represented. Having a diverse, inclusive range of content with authentic representation allows your company to expand to a broader community that will provide a similarly expanded point of you.
how does your expertise fulfill these needs?
I help educate companies on topics of diversity and inclusivity, offer feedback and insight on what they currently produce, advise on policy and safety initiatives, make training programs, and help find content producers that can provide the authentic voices of diverse minority groups.
In addition to general guidance and best practices, I can also provide more concentrated feedback or writing and editing services for LGBTQ+ needs.
